What it means
A call-out fee is a fixed minimum charge you levy to attend a site, whether or not work ends up being performed. The fee typically covers your travel time, fuel, the first 15 to 30 minutes on site, and the diagnostic work needed to assess the job. It protects you from spending 90 minutes attending a site for a job the customer then decides not to proceed with.
Common call-out fee structures
Standard call-out within a defined radius (eg $120 within 15km). Out-of-hours surcharge for evenings, weekends, and emergency call-outs (typically 1.5x or 2x). Out-of-radius surcharge per km beyond the standard radius. The first 30 minutes of diagnostic work are usually rolled into the call-out fee.
How to structure it on a quote
State the call-out fee, the radius it covers, the out-of-hours multiplier, and the out-of-radius rate. Whether the fee is credited against the repair cost if the customer proceeds. Many trades credit the call-out toward the repair to encourage the customer to say yes.
