Overview

Electric fences are sold by the line of fence, and the earthing is what makes the line work

Electric fences look like a per-metre product. So many metres of wire, so many strainers, and an energiser at the gate. The customer doesn't see what makes the fence actually deter intruders, which is the earthing. A long fence with bad earthing has weak pulses on the far end and the intruder walks through it. A short fence with proper earthing has full pulse all the way around. The quote that wins is the one that names the energiser brand, the wire spec, the earth rod count, and the monitoring integration with the customer's existing alarm. A flat per-metre quote with no earthing line is a fence that fails compliance.

QuoteGenio gives electric fence installers a structure that surfaces the system. Energiser by brand and joule rating, perimeter wires by metre with strainers and insulators, gate-bypass kit, earth rods by piece, warning signs as their own line, integration with the customer's alarm or monitoring system, and labour by day. Send via WhatsApp from the perimeter walk, take a deposit on the energiser and wire order, raise progress invoices as each side of the property goes up, and the final invoice when the system is energised and tested. The customer sees a working perimeter on commissioning day, not a question mark.

The problem

The quoting challenges every electric fence installer faces

Fence quotes depend on metres, strands, brackets per metre, energiser size, and whether a COC is required. Get any wrong and margin evaporates.

Site measurements eat time

A 200m perimeter with corners, gates, and slope variations takes an hour to measure and another evening to quote. Meanwhile faster competitors have already won the job.

Metre and bracket miscounts

Quoting '200m of fence' without bracket-per-metre detail means you under-order brackets and either eat the extra or delay the install. Neither helps margin.

COC legal requirement missed

Electric fences require a Certificate of Compliance issued by a registered installer. Clients don't know this until invoice day, then argue about the extra cost if it wasn't on the quote.

Pricing guide

Typical Electric Fence Installers job pricing

A rough guide to what electric fence installers charge for common residential and commercial perimeters. Pricing moves with strand count, wall-top vs stand-alone, and site access. Use these ranges as a reference point.

Wall-top electric fence (per metre, 6-strand)R364 - R744
Stand-alone electric fence (per metre, 8-strand)R628 - R1,240
4J energiser (residential)R2,975 - R5,619
8J energiser (commercial or large perimeter)R5,289 - R10,247

Electric fence COCR2,975 - R6,280

Pricing converted from USD to ZAR at indicative rates. Rates vary significantly by country, region, currency, and market.

Call-out fees

Site surveys for electric fences take 45 minutes per 200m of perimeter because you need to check wall type, existing structure, and gate positions. Charge R1,322 to R2,975 credited back on signed install. Free surveys attract tyre-kickers and waste your measuring time on clients who never sign.

Hourly vs fixed pricing

Quote electric fence installs fixed price per metre once strand count and energiser are confirmed. Use hourly (R1,405 to R1,983 per hour) for fault-finding, earth-spike diagnostics, and storm-damage repairs. COC is always a separate line, never bundled into labour.

Example quote breakdown

Here's a clean 120m wall-top fence quote. Every cost is visible. Brackets per metre, wire, energiser, earth, labour, and the COC. Fence clients quote-shop aggressively. A per-metre clear rate beats a lump-sum 'electric fence installation' every time.

Avoid these

Common quoting mistakes

Electric fence installers bleed margin on small items repeatedly. The same oversights show up on every job review. Fix these and you'll get cleaner COCs, fewer call-backs, and better referrals from insurance companies.

Mistake: Not quoting the COC

Better: Electric fence COCs are legally required for every new install, upgrade, and property transfer. List the COC as a separate R2,975 to R6,280 line. Without it, the client can't transfer the property and will blame you. Never quote an electric fence without the COC line, even for existing-fence repairs that trigger a new COC requirement.

Mistake: Underquoting earth spikes

Better: A proper electric fence earth system uses 3 earth spikes at 3m apart, interconnected with earth wire. Single-spike earths cause weak shock and false alarms. Quote 3 spikes as standard on any install over 100m. It's R992 of hardware that fixes 80 percent of all fence performance complaints.

Mistake: Missing warning signage

Better: Electric fences must have warning signs every 10m on public-facing sides and at every gate. Quote a set of 10 to 20 signs depending on perimeter. Without them, you fail the COC and your insurance doesn't cover an injury claim. Non-negotiable line on every quote.

Mistake: Skipping gate bypass

Better: Gates need a sprung bypass that carries the fence circuit over the gate opening. Without it, opening the gate breaks the circuit and the alarm triggers. Quote a gate bypass kit (R2,314 to R4,628) per electrified gate. Missing it means install-day scope creep.

Mistake: Wrong energiser size for perimeter length

Better: A 4J energiser handles up to about 2km of single strand under good conditions. A 6-strand fence on 200m is 1.2km effective and fine. A 6-strand fence on 500m is 3km effective and needs a bigger energiser. Always state energiser joule rating and perimeter capacity on the quote. Undersized energisers give weak shock and call-backs in wet weather.

Mistake: Vague post-storm service terms

Better: Fences take storm damage (trees fall, lightning hits). Publish a clear post-storm call-out rate on your quote terms (R1,570 to R2,479 call-out plus parts). Clients always think storm repairs are warranty. Making it explicit on the quote prevents arguments, and sets up a seasonal revenue stream after every big storm.

Mistake: Not testing voltage at the furthest point

Better: Commissioning must include a fence-voltage test at the furthest point from the energiser, documented on the COC. Below 4kV at the end means the fence is ineffective. Quote this test and document the reading. It's your protection when a client claims the fence 'doesn't shock hard enough' six months later.

Mistake: No follow-up after sending the quote

Better: Most quotes that don't close, don't close because nobody followed up. Send a polite check-in 48 hours after the quote lands, and a second nudge at day 7. Two of every three accepted quotes get there because someone followed up.

Step by step

How to quote electric fence installation jobs

Walk the entire perimeter with a tape and note the metres per side, the corners, and every gate opening. Check the wall type (plaster, face brick, precast) because that decides bracket selection and anti-theft stainless spec. For stand-alone runs, log the ground condition and whether poles will be drive-in or concreted. Identify overhanging trees and thatch because a fence fault arcing to thatch becomes a fire liability, and note any gate requiring a sprung bypass. Photograph the proposed energiser location and check it has mains or a solar-ready spot with sun, then test earth-spike ground at three points because a single spike at a dry site gives weak shock and a run of call-backs.

Quote brackets per metre with the strand count spelled out ('6-strand wall-top brackets, stainless, anti-theft'), high-tensile galvanised wire as a separate line with strand count times perimeter length, and the energiser by joule rating matched to effective wire length ('4J mains energiser covering up to 2km single-strand'). Always list three earth spikes at 3 metres apart with interconnecting earth wire, a gate bypass kit per electrified gate at $ 140 to $ 280, a set of warning signs at the legally required intervals, HT cable from energiser to fence, and an energiser-to-alarm dry contact interface if integrating with the client's alarm. Add the Certificate of Compliance as its own $ 180 to $ 380 line, never bundled.

Set a 30 day validity on fence quotes because bracket and wire stock tracks imported galvanised steel pricing and energiser pricing moves with exchange rate. State clearly whether you are EFSI registered and whether your price includes COC issuance or whether the client must arrange it separately, because vague language here causes disputes. Ask for a 50 percent deposit against materials order. Publish a post-storm call-out rate of $ 95 to $ 150 plus parts on your quote terms because clients always assume storm damage is warranty. Pass through the energiser manufacturer warranty (typically 2 years on mains, 1 year on battery) and add a 12 month workmanship warranty on brackets, wire tension, and terminations starting on COC issue date.

Send the quote before you pack the tape measure. Fence buyers are usually reacting to a break-in on their road and act within days, so the first per-metre PDF in their WhatsApp wins. Build the quote on your phone at the last corner, share the link before you leave, and follow up two days later with a short message asking whether they want you to reserve brackets and energiser stock. Any perimeter extension or strand upgrade requested after acceptance goes out as a numbered variation quote using the per-metre rate already established. Offer solar energiser as an optional line for rural or load-shedding-prone sites so the upsell conversation is on the quote, not squeezed in on install day.

FAQ

Common questions from electric fence installers

Everything you need to know before getting started.

Yes. Add per-metre pricing as a line with the metre count. Makes extension work simple to price later.

Yes. Share the quote as a link via WhatsApp from your phone.

Yes. Always add the COC as a separate line. It's legally required on every new install.

Yes. Every quote has a unique public link. The client accepts online.

Yes. One click converts the accepted quote to an invoice.

Yes. The free plan gives you 5 quotes and 2 invoices per month with no credit card required.

Wall-top sits on top of an existing wall, cheaper because the wall is the structure, you only add brackets, wire, and energiser. Typical per-metre price is 40 to 60 percent of stand-alone. Stand-alone is a full pole-supported fence, suitable where there's no wall (farms, smallholdings). Quote stand-alone with poles, post-holes (or drive-in), and often heavier gauge wire for longer spans. State clearly on the quote which type you're quoting and, if the site has a mix (wall plus farm fencing), split the perimeter into sections with separate per-metre rates.

Most modern energisers have zone outputs and can trigger the intruder alarm panel via a dry contact. On the quote, add a line for 'Energiser-to-alarm dry contact interface, wired to client's alarm panel' (R1,322 to R3,636). If the client's alarm goes to an armed-response company, they get a fence-tamper event just like a break-in. State clearly that the armed-response contract is between the client and their security company, not part of your fence install. The more these systems talk to each other, the more value the client feels, and the more add-on work you earn later.

Yes for off-grid sites (farms, remote perimeters, building sites) and as an optional upgrade for load-shedding-prone residential areas. Solar energisers have a panel, controller, deep-cycle battery, and waterproof enclosure. Quote typically R6,941 to R15,701 for the solar kit versus R2,975 to R5,619 for mains. State clearly the autonomy in cloudy conditions (typically 3 to 5 days). On residential quotes, offer it as optional with a note that it adds load-shedding immunity. The solar market for fencing has grown significantly and it's worth having a default spec ready in your template.

Thatch is a fire risk if fence faults arc to it. Trees shed branches onto fences and short them. On the site survey, identify any overhanging trees and nearby thatch, and note on the quote either a 'Client to trim back trees before install' condition, or a 'Branch clearance and vegetation management: $ X' line if you do it. For thatch-adjacent fences, quote extra insulation spacing and note the increased service requirement. Document all this on the quote, because fires caused by fence faults are liability issues and a written pre-install warning protects you if the client ignored it.
