Local context that should shape what you quote as a aircon installer in Napier-Hastings. Temperate Mediterranean (NZ's sunniest driest region). Warm dry summers (Dec-Feb, 22-26°C, occasional 30°C+, low humidity), mild winters (June-Aug, 6-12°C, occasional overnight frost), low rainfall (~800mm/year, water restrictions common in summer). Earthquake risk significant (1931 quake + Hikurangi subduction). Cyclone Gabrielle Feb 2023 caused massive flooding.
IRHACE + Approved Filler certification
Institute of Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers NZ (IRHACE) certification and EPA Approved Filler permit required for refrigerant work. Print both on every quote and invoice. Required for warranty validation on Mitsubishi, Daikin, Panasonic.
Heat pump dominant residential
Heat pumps are the standard heating/cooling solution (90%+ of new Hawke's Bay homes). Quote single-room split heat pump (NZ$3,750-NZ$9,380), multi-room (NZ$10,650-NZ$27,500), ducted whole-home (NZ$18,750-NZ$56,250). Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Panasonic, Fujitsu common.

NZ's sunniest driest region drives summer cooling
Hawke's Bay is NZ's sunniest driest region (~2,200 sunshine hours/year, summer 22-26°C with 30°C+ days). Drives strong summer cooling demand. Quote pre-summer service plans (NZ$230-NZ$480 per visit) as recurring revenue. Pre-summer (October-November) is critical.
Hawke's Bay wine industry + apple packhouse refrigeration
Te Mata Estate, Mission Estate, Church Road, Craggy Range wineries and T&G Hawke's Bay/Mr Apple packhouses (Twyford 4172, Whakatu) drive commercial refrigeration (fermentation cooling, cool stores, controlled-atmosphere rooms). FAQ
Napier-Hastings aircon installer pricing questions, answered
Common questions about aircon installer pricing in Napier-Hastings, with answers framed for tradies pricing their own work.
NZ$110-NZ$195/hour for IRHACE-certified work in standard Hawke's Bay, NZ$165-NZ$270+/hour for Bluff Hill, Havelock North and Marewa. Per-system install: single-room heat pump NZ$3,750-NZ$9,380; multi-room NZ$10,650-NZ$27,500; ducted whole-home NZ$18,750-NZ$56,250. State IRHACE + Approved Filler numbers on every quote.
Yes, both. Institute of Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers NZ (IRHACE) certification and EPA Approved Filler permit required for refrigerant work. Print both on every quote and invoice. Required for warranty validation on Mitsubishi, Daikin, Panasonic.
Yes, dominant market. Heat pumps are the standard heating/cooling solution (90%+ of new Hawke's Bay homes). Quote single-room split (NZ$3,750-NZ$9,380), multi-room (NZ$10,650-NZ$27,500), ducted whole-home (NZ$18,750-NZ$56,250). Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Panasonic, Fujitsu common.
NZ$18,750-NZ$56,250 per system for zoned multi-stage ducted heat pump with smart thermostats (Mitsubishi MELCloud, Daikin Onecta) and MERV 13+ filtration. Premium brands (Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan, Daikin Altherma, Panasonic Aquarea) preferred.
Yes, recurring market. Healthy Homes Standards 2019 mandate fixed heater in every rental's main living room sized to NZS4218. Quote landlord-portfolio rental heat pump installs (NZ$3,500-NZ$6,880 per main room) at portfolio rates. Bundle with Healthy Homes assessor coordination.
Wall-split installations run roughly $375-500 per kW installed. A 5kW unit fully installed is $2,250-3,200; a 12kW multi-head system is $6,250-9,000. Ducted systems run $875-1,200 per kW because of the ducting work.
Heat-load rule of thumb: 0.15kW per square metre in moderate climates, 0.20kW in hot climates. A 25sqm bedroom needs 4-5kW; a 50sqm open-plan needs 7-9kW. Over-sized units short-cycle and waste energy; under-sized never cool the room. Insist on a heat-load calc for any install over $3,750.
For installs over $2,500, get 2-3 quotes. Compare brand, capacity, warranty, refrigerant type, and install detail. The cheapest quote often uses budget brands with 3-year warranties vs branded units with 5-7 year warranties for 10-20% more.
Wall splits are individual units, cheaper, easier to install, each room independent. Ducted is one outdoor unit with hidden roof-space ducting to all rooms, more expensive but cleaner aesthetic and centralised control. Wall splits cost half what ducted does for the same total kW.
A standard 5kW wall-split install is 4-6 hours for a 2-person team. Multi-head and ducted systems take 2-3 days. Larger commercial or ceiling-cassette installs take 4-5 days.
