Overview

Underfloor heating is sold by the zone, and the floor build-up is the line the customer's flooring contractor has to know about

Underfloor heating (UFH) installers fit the heating system that the customer is going to walk on. The two main types are electric (mat or cable in a self-levelling screed or under tiles) and water-based (pipework loops in a screed connected to a boiler or heat pump). Each has a different install, a different running cost, and a different heat-up speed. The customer rarely thinks about the floor build-up height that UFH adds, the insulation underneath that decides the efficiency, and the integration with the rest of the heating system. A flat 'UFH install, $4,800' quote without the system type, the zone plan, the floor build-up, and the integration misses half the conversation.

QuoteGenio gives UFH installers a quoting shape that surfaces the system. Survey and heat-loss calculation as the first line, system type (electric or water-based) with the manifold or controller spec, insulation board by thickness with the U-value, pipework or mat by zone with the spacing, controls and thermostats by zone, integration with the boiler or heat pump where applicable, install labour, screed or self-leveller as a separate line (often the screed contractor's job), and commissioning with a pressure test. Send via WhatsApp or email to the customer or main contractor, take a deposit on the equipment order, raise progress invoices through install, and the final invoice closes with the pressure-test certificate.

The problem

The quoting headaches every UFH installer knows

UFH jobs involve plumbing, heating, insulation, and controls in one package. Miss one and the system fails. Quote all four clearly and you win jobs the generic competitors cannot.

System design changes price by 2x

Wet UFH vs electric UFH, screed vs no-screed, pumped vs unpumped manifold. Wrong system on the quote and your margin is gone.

Insulation and screed are easy to forget

Clients see 'UFH pipes' and think that's the job. Without insulation and screed, the heat goes into the floor below. Itemise or undersell.

Commercial tenders need design output

Plumbing contractors want to see zone calculations, heat loss figures, and manifold specs. Generic quotes lose to design-build specialists.

The fix

QuoteGenio makes it simple

Structured quotes with insulation, pipework, manifold, screed, and controls on separate lines. Every system component visible and priced.

Pricing guide

Typical Underfloor Heating Installers job pricing

Guideline pricing for common UFH jobs. Rates shift with system (wet vs electric), build-up type (traditional vs low-profile), insulation depth, and control complexity. Use as a sanity check.

JobTypical range
Wet UFH (per sq m, standard screed build-up)$ 95 - $ 180 / sq m
Wet UFH (per sq m, low-profile retrofit)$ 145 - $ 280 / sq m
Electric UFH (per sq m)$ 58 - $ 120 / sq m
Electric UFH (per sq m, loose wire)$ 75 - $ 140 / sq m
Manifold and mixing valve (per unit)$ 680 - $ 2,400 ea
Thermostat and control (per zone)$ 180 - $ 680 / zone
Screed (liquid or sand/cement, per sq m)$ 38 - $ 85 / sq m

Pricing shown in USD as a rough benchmark. Rates vary significantly by country, region, currency, and market.

Call-out fees

UFH surveys need proper heat loss calculations for each zone. Charge $ 280 to $ 580 for a full survey including heat loss calculation, zone layout, and system specification. Refund against the contract. Design-build quotes win more commercial work than specification-only quotes.

Hourly vs fixed pricing

Use fixed per sq m pricing for standard new-build wet UFH with 50-75mm screed. Use hourly rates ($ 95 to $ 160 per hour per installer plus materials) for retrofit work (low-profile over existing floors), heat pump integration, or complex multi-zone systems. Screed is almost always sub-contracted; quote it as a provisional sum if you don't do it yourself.

Avoid these

Common quoting mistakes

UFH installers tell us the same mistakes cost the industry warranty claims and poor reputations. Fix these and your clients (and their main contractors) come back for more.

Mistake: Quoting UFH without insulation

Better: UFH over uninsulated slab heats the ground below, not the room. Quote minimum 50mm PIR on ground floor, 30-50mm on upper floors. State the insulation thickness and R-value in the quote. No exceptions.

Mistake: One thermostat for multiple zones

Better: Open-plan areas can share a zone, but kitchen, living, and bedrooms each have different heating needs. Quote one thermostat per zone. Smart thermostats (Heatmiser NeoStat, Tado) command a premium but save significant running costs.

Mistake: No heat loss calculation

Better: Undersized UFH never heats the room. Do the heat loss calc (or quote it as a separate design fee) before sizing pipe centres. State the calculation basis in the quote notes.

Mistake: Forgetting edge insulation

Better: Perimeter edge insulation (10mm foam strip against walls) allows the screed to expand. Without it, the screed cracks. Quote per running metre of perimeter; typically $ 6-$ 12 per metre.

Mistake: Screed bundled with UFH labour

Better: Screed is a separate trade. Quote it as a provisional sum or sub-contract line. State whether you are providing the screed or the client is arranging it. Confusion here delays jobs for weeks.

Mistake: No pressure test documentation

Better: Industry practice is to pressure test pipework to 6 bar for minimum 30 minutes before screed goes in. Document the test results in the quote terms and repeat on the invoice as handover evidence. Main contractors require this for their warranty.

Mistake: Control system as an afterthought

Better: Controls are 10-15% of the system cost but 50% of the usability. Quote the control system fully: thermostats, wiring centre, pump group interlock. A UFH system without proper controls is just expensive floor heating.

Mistake: No follow-up after sending the quote

Better: Most quotes that don't close, don't close because nobody followed up. Send a polite check-in 48 hours after the quote lands, and a second nudge at day 7. Two of every three accepted quotes get there because someone followed up.

Step by step

How to quote underfloor heating jobs

UFH is plumbing, heating, insulation, and controls in one package, so survey all four before you price. Measure the heated floor area by zone, not just total area, because open-plan kitchens, living areas, and bedrooms each need their own thermostat. Check the build-up: new-build with 50 to 75mm screed allows traditional wet UFH, while retrofit over existing joists or solid floors needs a low-profile panel system at 15 to 25mm. Measure ceiling heights to confirm the build-up does not lose more than 50mm of headroom. Identify the heat source (gas boiler, air source heat pump, ground source) because heat pump systems need 150 to 200mm pipe centres and a low-pressure-drop manifold. Do a heat loss calculation before sizing pipe centres, or quote it as a separate design fee of $ 180 to $ 480.

Itemise 50mm PIR insulation board across the full floor (essential, never negotiable), edge insulation strip per running metre at the perimeter for screed expansion, clip rail or staple system per square metre for pipe fixing, and Rehau or Uponor PE-Xa pipe per square metre with the circuit lengths calculated. The manifold and mixing valve with pump group goes as a single unit price with port count stated (6-port, 8-port), and thermostats are priced per zone with the brand named (Heatmiser NeoStat, Tado, Honeywell Evohome). Pressure test, fill, and commission is a discrete line because it generates the certificate main contractors need for their warranty. Screed is quoted as a sub-contract provisional or noted as 'by others', heat source integration and wiring centre as its own line, and handover documentation (O&M manual, commissioning certificate) is always included.

UFH quotes carry a 30 to 45 day validity because Rehau, Uponor, and Viega pipe pricing moves with polymer markets and smart thermostats have 2 to 3 week lead times. Stage payments on anything over $ 8k: 30 percent on acceptance to order pipe and manifold, 30 percent at pipe laid and pressure tested, 30 percent at commissioning, 10 percent on handover to the main contractor. Attach the Rehau 10 year pipe warranty or equivalent, Heatmiser thermostat warranty, and state a workmanship warranty of 5 years on the installation. Pressure test documentation (6 bar for 30 minutes minimum before screed) is included in terms because main contractors require this evidence. Flow temperature constraints on heat pump systems must not exceed 40 degrees C, and this is written into the terms. Variation orders (additional zones, smart control upgrades, heat pump integration) are quoted before execution.

UFH work is almost always part of a larger build, so your client is the main contractor or plumbing contractor and they compare on specification completeness, not just price. Email the quote as a PDF with the heat loss calculation, zone layout, pipe centres, manifold spec, and programme attached because this is what separates design-build specialists from generic plumbers. Send within 48 hours of the site visit. Follow up after a week to confirm the quote has been reviewed and to offer a site visit with the main contractor to coordinate the screeder booking (screeders book 2 to 6 weeks ahead and can delay the whole trade sequence). Variations during the install (additional insulation thickness, extra zone, heat pump spec change) must be quoted and signed before execution because pipe laid in screed cannot be altered. Offer annual service visits ($ 120 to $ 320) within a week of handover.

FAQ

Common questions from UFH installers

Everything you need to know before getting started.

Yes. Quote each system as a separate line or as alternative quotes. Some clients want the cost comparison; let them see both with their running costs in the notes.

Yes. Add a line item for design and heat loss calculation ($ 180-$ 480 per property). Most commercial clients require it as part of the tender documentation.

Yes. Save Rehau, Uponor, Heatmiser, and your preferred brand warranties in the terms section. They attach to every quote automatically.

Yes. Every quote has a shareable link. Send via WhatsApp or email. Main contractors can open the PDF on any device.

Upper floor UFH typically uses a low-profile system (15-25mm panel) instead of traditional 50-75mm screed. Materials cost more but overall build-up saves space and weight. Quote low-profile at 40-60% premium over standard, and include a line for structural check (suspended floor load) if the contractor hasn't done this.

Retrofit involves lifting existing flooring, assessing subfloor condition, installing low-profile UFH, and reinstating finishes. Each step needs a separate line. Retrofit is typically 2-3 times the cost of new build UFH for the same area. State the specific system (Uponor Minitec, Warmup Dual Overlay, etc.) and lead times.

Heat pumps work best at 35-40°C flow temperatures; UFH is designed for these low temperatures. Quote the heat pump-specific manifold (low-pressure drop), correct pipe centres (150-200mm for heat pump), and wiring centre with weather compensation. Include a line for commissioning in conjunction with the heat pump installer, and note that flow temperature shall not exceed the heat pump rating.

Screed is almost always sub-contracted to a specialist screeder. Quote it as a provisional sum line (with the actual screed sub-contractor's quote attached if available) or as a separate line noting 'by others'. Screeders need to book 2-6 weeks in advance; build this into your quote timeline.

Yes. Annual service visits ($ 120-$ 320) to check pressure, bleed air, and inspect thermostats can be offered as a recurring quote. Send them automatically every 12 months.

Yes. Quote basic thermostats versus smart (Heatmiser NeoHub with app, Tado, Nest) as upgrade options. Modern clients pay for smart control if the premium is shown clearly on the quote.
