Overview

Electrical quotes are part labour, part materials, part paperwork

Electrical work is regulated, and that regulation shows up on the quote. The Certificate of Compliance after the job is real time and real liability, not a freebie. The labour line covers pulling cable, mounting boards, terminating sockets, and testing. Materials, breakers, conduit, and the certificate are their own line items. Customers who have only ever seen a single 'electrical work' line on a quote often query the breakdown the first time, and that's a conversation worth having. The detail is the difference between sounding like a qualified electrician and sounding like a handyman.

QuoteGenio gives electricians a structure for this. Quote labour by day or by point, parts at retail with the markup baked in, and the COC as its own line with a fixed fee. Add a contingency for hidden conduit runs through old plaster. The customer accepts on WhatsApp, the same record turns into a deposit invoice, and the final invoice attaches the certificate when the work is signed off. You spend the time on the job, not on Word documents at 9pm rewriting the same labour breakdown for the next quote.

The problem

The quoting problems every electrician faces

Between call-outs, compliance, and chasing payments. The last thing you need is a quoting process that slows you down.

Quotes written up after hours

You spend your evenings typing up quotes when you should be resting. It slows your whole business down.

No standard quote format

Every quote looks different. Clients can't compare line items and trust suffers as a result.

Jobs go to faster competitors

Electricians who respond in minutes win jobs over those who take a day to send a quote.

The fix

QuoteGenio fixes that

A clean, fast quoting workflow designed around the way electricians actually operate, on the move and under pressure.

Pricing guide

Typical Electricians job pricing

A rough guide to what electricians charge for common jobs. Pricing varies by region, voltage, access, and whether the work is domestic or commercial. Use these ranges as a reference point when you build your own rate card, not as fixed prices.

JobTypical range
Standard call-out (first hour)R1,570 - R2,892

Circuit breaker replacementR1,570 - R3,305
Electrical inspection / compliance reportR2,975 - R6,941
Electrical panel upgrade (200A)R19,832 - R56,192
Full house rewire (3-bed, basic)R90,899 - R206,588
Solar / PV install (5kW hybrid)R206,588 - R363,594

Pricing converted from USD to ZAR at indicative rates. Rates vary significantly by country, region, currency, and market.

Call-out fees

Typical daytime call-out is R1,570 to R2,892. After-hours and weekend jobs typically carry a 1.5x to 2x premium. Your call-out should cover travel plus the first 30 to 60 minutes on-site. List it as its own line on every quote.

Hourly vs fixed pricing

Use hourly (R1,405 to R2,149 per hour) for fault-finding and diagnostic work. Use fixed prices for clear jobs like breaker swaps, point installs, and COC inspections. On rewires, use fixed for known scope plus a provisional sum line for hidden work.

Example quote breakdown

Here's what a clean, itemised quote for a typical DB board upgrade looks like. Each cost is visible: call-out, enclosure, protective devices, labour, and the Certificate of Compliance. Clear quotes get accepted faster because they answer every question before the client has to ask.

Avoid these

Common quoting mistakes

We talk to a lot of electricians. The same pricing and scoping traps come up again and again. Fix these and you'll protect your margin, avoid invoice disputes, and close jobs faster.

Mistake: Bundling COC into labour

Better: List the COC as a separate line. Clients need to see it; insurers need it too. Hiding it in labour causes disputes later.

Mistake: Not accounting for remediation on a COC

Better: A COC inspection often uncovers faults. Quote the inspection itself, then quote remediation separately once scope is known.

Mistake: Flat hourly rate for everything

Better: Commercial, emergency, and roof or loft work all deserve premium rates. Have at least three rate tiers in your quote template.

Mistake: No allowance for cable runs

Better: If you're quoting by point (plug, light, switch) build in an average metres-of-cable assumption. Long cable runs eat your margin fast.

Mistake: Fixed-price quotes on rewire jobs

Better: Scope creep is guaranteed on rewires. Use a fixed price for known circuits and a 'provisional sum' line for unknowns, with a clear re-measure clause.

Mistake: Leaving out small consumables

Better: Trunking, cable clips, glands, sleeving. They add up. A 'materials and consumables' line at 8 to 12 percent of materials stops this bleeding your margin.

Mistake: Not quoting the trip back for commissioning

Better: If you need to return to commission a solar system or hand over a COC, that's a second call-out. Quote it upfront so there's no awkward conversation later.

Mistake: No follow-up after sending the quote

Better: Most quotes that don't close, don't close because nobody followed up. Send a polite check-in 48 hours after the quote lands, and a second nudge at day 7. Two of every three accepted quotes get there because someone followed up.

Step by step

How to quote electrical jobs

Inspect before you quote on anything beyond a single point or swap. Check the panel capacity, look for accessible cable routes, count the circuits you will touch, and flag any obvious non-compliance that will need remediation before you can sign a Certificate of Compliance. For a COC inspection, quote the inspection itself as a fixed fee and make it explicit that remediation is priced separately once the fault list is known. Trying to quote remediation blind is how electricians end up working at a loss on handover certificates.

Itemise labour, parts, cable, and compliance as separate lines. Have at least three rate tiers in your template (standard residential, commercial, and emergency or roof work), not a flat hourly rate across every job. List cable runs per metre, add a small consumables allowance of 8 to 12 percent of materials for trunking, glands, sleeving, and cable clips, and always list the Certificate of Compliance on its own line: clients, conveyancers, and insurers expect to see it priced separately. On rewires, use fixed pricing for known circuits and a provisional sum line for unknowns with a clear re-measure clause.

Set a 14 to 30 day validity on every quote and show VAT as its own line, even to business clients. Commercial clients claim VAT back, residential clients want to see it, and bundling it into the subtotal causes invoice disputes every time. Publish your after-hours and weekend rate on the quote (typically 1.5x to 2x standard) with a minimum call-out time so premium pricing is accepted in writing before the weekend emergency call lands.

Send the quote from the site via WhatsApp before you leave the driveway. The electrician who responds first with a professional itemised document usually wins the job, especially on residential installs where three quotes get compared in an afternoon. Quote the commissioning trip separately on solar, EV charger, and alarm jobs; it is a second call-out, not a free hand-over. Issue any scope changes during a rewire as a variation quote and get it accepted online before you do the extra work.

Yes. You can add any line item: labour, materials, compliance fees, call-out charges, or custom items. Quotes are fully flexible to match how you invoice.

Yes. Once your quote is ready, share it as a link via WhatsApp. Your client gets a professional document instantly. No app required on their end.

Add each phase or scope of work as separate line items or sections. You can include notes per line item to keep everything clear for the client.

Yes. Every quote has a unique public link. Clients open it on their phone and accept it online. No account or app needed.

Yes. Convert any accepted quote to an invoice with one click. All line items carry over automatically. No re-entering anything.

Yes. The free plan gives you 5 quotes and 2 invoices per month with no credit card required. Upgrade to Premium for unlimited quotes, invoices, statements, and reports.

Yes. Always list the Certificate of Compliance as its own line. Clients, conveyancers, and insurers all expect to see it priced separately. Bundling it into labour looks evasive and can cause payment disputes.

Issue the original quote for the agreed scope, then use a separate 'variation quote' (VO) for any changes. Get it accepted in writing (the online accept link works) before doing the extra work. QuoteGenio makes it one-click to duplicate and edit a quote.

Fixed-price for standard residential installs where you can specify the panels, inverter, and battery upfront. Cost-plus (or provisional sums) for commercial or where the roof structure is unknown. Be explicit about what's included: panels, inverter, battery, mounting, wiring, COC, commissioning, and grid tie application.

Most electricians charge a higher call-out (typically 1.5x to 2x standard) and an uplifted hourly rate after hours and on weekends. Put these in your terms and reference them on the quote so there's no friction on the invoice.
