Overview
An inverter is the brain of every solar or backup system, and the spec sheet has to be on the quote
An inverter is the part of a solar or backup system that does the work the customer doesn't see. AC to DC for charging, DC to AC for the loads, MPPT tracking for the panels, automatic transfer if there's a grid, parallel stacking if there are multiple units. The brand and the topology change everything: a string inverter for grid-tie behaves nothing like a hybrid inverter that stores excess to a battery, and an off-grid inverter has to be sized for the worst-case load with no grid to lean on. A quote that just lists 'inverter' without spec gives the customer no idea whether they're buying the right architecture for their situation.
QuoteGenio gives inverter installers room to put the architecture on the page. Inverter by brand, model, topology, and kVA rating, MPPT trackers and string design, AC isolators, DC isolators, surge protection, cable runs by metre, and a commissioning test. Send the quote via WhatsApp from the survey, take a deposit on the inverter order, and the final invoice ties to a commissioning record showing the system passed its initial loads. The customer who paid for a hybrid inverter sees they got a hybrid inverter, not a grid-tie unit dressed up.
Who it is for
Who uses QuoteGenio
Built for technicians installing backup inverter systems in homes, offices, and small commercial sites.
The problem
The quoting challenges every inverter installer faces
Inverter quotes are more than just the box. DB rework, essential load boards, battery cabinets, and cable runs all need their own line.
Quotes take a full evening
You visit three clients a day, then spend three hours each night writing up inverter quotes. Meanwhile the client already accepted a competitor who sent the quote on WhatsApp.
Essential load sizing errors
Clients say 'I just want lights and Wi-Fi' then plug a kettle into the backed-up circuit. Without a clear essential load list on the quote, the blame lands on you.
Battery upgrade ambiguity
'Add another battery later' means nothing without a clear compatible-model spec. Future expansion disputes come back on you when the cheaper battery won't parallel.

Pricing guide
Typical Inverter Installers job pricing
A rough guide to what inverter installers charge for common residential backup jobs. Pricing moves with inverter brand, battery capacity, and whether an essential load board is needed. Use these ranges as a reference, not fixed prices.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Site assessment and load check | R1,322 - R2,975 |
| 3kVA inverter with 2.4kWh battery | R29,749 - R46,276 |
| 5kW hybrid inverter with 5kWh battery | R62,803 - R95,857 |
| 8kW hybrid with 10kWh battery | R107,426 - R157,007 |
| Essential load DB board install | R6,941 - R15,701 |
| Battery-only add-on (5kWh) | R27,270 - R46,276 |
| Annual inverter service and firmware | R2,314 - R4,628 |
Pricing converted from USD to ZAR at indicative rates. Rates vary significantly by country, region, currency, and market.
Call-out fees
Site assessment involves checking the existing DB, measuring essential loads, and scoping the battery location. Charge R1,322 to R2,975 and credit it back on a signed install. Free assessments waste your technical time on clients who were never going to sign.
Hourly vs fixed pricing
Quote inverter installs fixed price once inverter, battery, and essential loads are defined. Use hourly (R1,405 to R2,149 per hour) for fault-finding, firmware issues, and client-caused trips. Always add a provisional sum line for DB rework if the existing board is old or unknown.

Avoid these
Common quoting mistakes
Inverter quoting has tightened up a lot but the same mistakes still bleed margin. The load-shedding era trained clients to compare quotes aggressively, so clarity and structure beat low prices. Fix these and your close rate improves.
Mistake: Not defining essential loads on the quote
Better: Write the exact circuit list on the quote: 'Backed-up circuits: lights, plugs in bedrooms and lounge, fridge, Wi-Fi, TV'. Anything not on the list is not backed up. This kills the 'but I thought the whole house would work' argument on commissioning day.
Mistake: Vague battery expansion promise
Better: Never write 'can add another battery later' without a model number and a price. Write 'Expansion: 1x additional Pylontech US3000C at today's price of R28,922 plus R3,966 labour, subject to firmware compatibility'. This keeps you honest and the client informed.
Mistake: Forgetting the essential load DB
Better: Retrofitting backed-up circuits into the main DB often means a sub-board. Quote it as a separate R6,941 to R15,701 line. If you skip it and discover it's needed on install day, you eat the extra half-day of work.
Mistake: No COC line
Better: Inverter installs require a Certificate of Compliance and insurance companies will refuse claims without one. Always list the COC as its own R2,975 to R4,958 line. Absorbing it into labour looks evasive.
Mistake: Not specifying inverter brand and model
Better: Generic 'hybrid inverter' lines invite the client to compare your R24,791 Sunsynk to a competitor's R14,874 unbranded unit. Write the exact brand, model, and kW rating on every quote. Protects you from apples-to-oranges price shopping.
Mistake: Skipping surge protection
Better: Grid outages cause voltage spikes on restoration. Without a DC surge protector on the battery side and an AC surge protector on the grid side, you'll see premature inverter failures. Always quote both. It's R2,314 of parts that protects a R57,845 install.
Mistake: No monitoring app handover line
Better: Every inverter now comes with a monitoring app (Sunsynk Connect, Solarman, etc). Client onboarding to the app takes 20 minutes and saves you 10 support calls. Quote it as a 'R1,322 client training and app setup' line or build it into commissioning.
Mistake: No follow-up after sending the quote
Better: Most quotes that don't close, don't close because nobody followed up. Send a polite check-in 48 hours after the quote lands, and a second nudge at day 7. Two of every three accepted quotes get there because someone followed up.
Step by step
How to quote inverter installation jobs
Open the existing DB on the site visit, photograph it, and list the circuits the client actually wants backed up: lights, plugs in bedrooms and lounge, fridge, Wi-Fi, TV. Measure real load on each of those circuits with a clamp meter rather than trusting nameplate, and note whether the kettle, geyser, or aircon is on the same ring as anything essential. Check the condition of the main DB (age, earth leakage, space for a contactor) because retrofitting an essential load sub-board is often the real cost on a 5kW hybrid. Confirm the wall space for the inverter, the battery, and surge protection, and measure the cable run to the DB in metres.
Itemise the inverter by brand, kW, and model ('Sunsynk or Deye 5kW hybrid'), the battery by chemistry and model ('Pylontech US3000C 5.12kWh'), and the essential load DB as its own 6-way or 8-way board line. Break out cabling, MCBs, isolators, Type 2 AC surge, and DC surge on the battery side into separate lines. Add a named neutral-earth bonding contactor for island mode so your earth leakage works when the grid is down. Put a '$ 95 firmware update and monitoring app onboarding' line on every quote and, where the existing board is old or unknown, add a provisional sum of $ 280 to $ 620 for DB remediation subject to inspection.
Set a 14 day validity because Sunsynk, Deye, and Pylontech stock and pricing move with import shipments. State on the quote that the backed-up circuit list is the contract and any additional circuit requested after commissioning is a variation. Ask for a 50 percent deposit against inverter and battery order, balance on commissioning. Pass through the inverter manufacturer warranty (typically 5 years on Sunsynk-class hybrids) and the battery warranty (10 years or 6,000 cycles at stated depth of discharge) and add a 12 month workmanship warranty starting on commissioning. Note explicitly that warranty on client-supplied batteries is excluded and that the labour rate is higher where the client sources their own equipment.
Send the quote from the site because load-shedding clients buy on urgency and the first professional PDF in their WhatsApp usually wins. Build the quote on your phone while still at the DB, share it as a WhatsApp link before you leave, and follow up two or three days later asking whether they want you to reserve the Pylontech stock given short supply. Any scope change after acceptance (adding a second battery, backing up an extra circuit, swapping to a larger inverter) goes out as a numbered variation quote with fresh pricing, never absorbed. An expansion section listing today's price for an additional 5kWh module with a 6 month validity closes the deal and seeds the next one.
FAQ
Common questions from inverter installers
Everything you need to know before getting started.
Yes. Add each component as its own line with brand and model. Clients want to see exactly what they're paying for.
Yes. Share the quote as a link via WhatsApp from your phone. The client opens a professional PDF instantly.
Yes. Add the Certificate of Compliance as a separate line on every inverter quote.
Yes. Every quote has a unique public link. The client opens it and accepts online, no account needed.
Yes. One click converts the accepted quote to an invoice. All line items carry over automatically.
Yes. The free plan gives you 5 quotes and 2 invoices per month with no credit card required.
Quote the inverter and battery scope at fixed price. For the DB side, quote a fixed price for a new essential load sub-board and add a provisional sum (typically R4,628 to R10,247) for remediation if the main DB is found to be non-compliant on inspection. State clearly that the provisional sum only applies if you uncover issues. Most clients accept this because it mirrors how builders handle unknowns, and it protects you from eating compliance remediation out of your install margin.
Yes. When the inverter runs in island mode (grid down), it becomes the source, and without proper neutral-earth bonding the earth leakage protection doesn't work on the backed-up circuits. This is a R1,983 to R3,966 line item that matters for safety and compliance. State on the quote that the essential load DB includes island-mode neutral-earth bonding via a contactor. It sounds technical but clients respect the detail.
Wall-mounted Pylontech-style batteries don't need a cabinet. Tower-stack or larger LiFePO4 batteries need a ventilated enclosure with fire-rated backing if mounted indoors. Quote the cabinet, bracket, or plinth as a separate line (R2,314 to R9,586). If the client wants the battery in a garage near combustibles, quote an outdoor weatherproof cabinet instead. Put the location decision on the quote as a named 'Installation location: XYZ' line so the decision is documented.
Always on rural installs, strongly recommended on urban. Quote Type 2 AC surge protection on the inverter AC input, DC surge on the battery and PV side if applicable, and earth spike verification. In high-lightning regions add Type 1 at the service entry. This is typically R3,636 to R7,933 of parts plus an hour of labour. State on the quote that surge protection does not cover direct lightning strikes. No one's insurer pays for direct strikes, so don't accept that risk.
