Overview

Home automation quotes are sold on the programming, not the boxes

Home automation at the professional end is what the customer is paying for: a Crestron, Control4, Lutron, or KNX system that controls lighting, blinds, audio, climate, security, and the front gate from one touchscreen or app. The hardware is significant, but the labour is the bigger surprise. Programming the system to behave the way the customer wants ('movie mode dims the lounge, lowers the blinds, and switches the projector to HDMI 2') is bespoke work that takes a day per zone and a week of revisions afterwards. A quote that just lists the equipment and a labour day for install hides the programming, and the programming is what makes the difference between a $50,000 system and an expensive light switch.

QuoteGenio gives home automation installers a structure that prices the programming honestly. Equipment by manufacturer with a system schematic, install labour for hardware, programming labour by zone or by scene, customer training, and a year of post-handover tweaks priced as a separate care contract. Send via WhatsApp or PDF to the client (typically also their interior designer or architect), take a substantial deposit on the equipment order, raise progress invoices through pre-wire, hardware install, and programming, and the final invoice closes after the customer has used the system for a month and approved the scenes.

The problem

The quoting challenges every automation installer faces

Automation quotes span lighting, blinds, audio, HVAC, security, and control. Missing a zone means re-quoting and looking unprofessional.

Custom quotes take a week

A proper custom home quote involves room-by-room scene design, cable schedules, and control interface programming. By the time you deliver, the client has cooled on the project.

Programming hours underquoted

Programming a Control4 or KNX system takes longer than the physical install. Underquoting programming hours is how integrators go broke on premium projects.

Scope drift from client wishlist

Automation clients keep adding features during design. Without a locked scope on the quote, every 'can we also...' becomes free work.

The fix

QuoteGenio makes automation quoting professional

Pricing guide

Typical Home Automation Installers job pricing

A rough guide to what home automation installers charge for common custom residential jobs. Pricing varies wildly with system (Control4 vs KNX vs Lutron), complexity, and finish level. Use these ranges as a reference point, not fixed prices.

Central control processor (Control4 / Crestron class)R36,359 - R107,426
Programming and commissioning (per hour)R1,983 - R3,636
Client training and handoverR4,628 - R11,238

Pricing converted from USD to ZAR at indicative rates. Rates vary significantly by country, region, currency, and market.

Call-out fees

Design consultation for custom automation can be a full day's work, producing a scope document, schematic, and fixed-price quote. Charge R4,628 to R15,701 and credit it back on signed install. High-end clients respect paying for design, it filters out tyre-kickers and sets the tone for a premium project.

Hourly vs fixed pricing

Quote hardware and cabling fixed price. Quote programming as hourly (R1,983 to R3,636 per hour) with an estimated range and a ceiling, or as a fixed 'programming package' per room. Always bill training separately from commissioning, they're different conversations.

Avoid these

Common quoting mistakes

Automation integrators bleed margin on programming and scope creep. The same mistakes kill even good technical installs. Fix these and your custom jobs will both close faster and run more profitably.

Mistake: Underquoting programming hours

Better: Programming is almost always longer than physical install. A 4-zone lighting scene with 6 buttons per keypad is typically 8 to 12 hours to program, test, and refine. Always quote programming with a range and a ceiling: '10 to 14 hours at R2,727 per hour, ceiling 16 hours'. Never quote 'programming included' without hours. You will always exceed it.

Mistake: No locked scope on design

Better: Produce a scope document before any quote: room list, zones per room, scenes per zone, control points. Have the client sign-off the scope. Quote only what's in scope. Any 'can we add this' after sign-off is a variation quote at the same hourly rate. Without this, every client wants 40 hours of extra programming for free.

Mistake: Skipping the automation rack UPS

Better: An automation rack without UPS crashes every power blip and takes 10 minutes to boot. Clients call you angry. Quote a 1.5 to 3kVA UPS (R10,247 to R23,964) on every automation rack. Non-negotiable on premium homes. It protects the whole system and stops the Sunday-night support calls.

Mistake: No engraving on keypads

Better: Generic 'Scene 1, Scene 2' buttons are worthless in a luxury home. Keypad engraving ('Movie', 'Dinner', 'Goodnight') is standard at this price point. Quote engraving per keypad (R661 to R1,983 per keypad) separately. Skipping this feels cheap on a R826k system and clients remember the details.

Mistake: Bundling hardware and programming

Better: Always split the hardware price from the programming price. It lets the client see what they're getting for hardware versus for your expertise. It also lets them understand that adding a scene to an existing keypad is a programming change (2 hours) not a hardware change (zero). This education pays off for years in MAC revenue.

Mistake: No client-training line

Better: Handover without training is a disaster. Quote a dedicated training session (R4,628 to R11,238) after commissioning, preferably 1 to 2 weeks later when the client has real questions. It should cover scene customisation, adding guests, resetting after a glitch, and who to call for support. Well-trained clients are happy clients and become referrers.

Mistake: Forgetting the post-install tuning visit

Better: Every automation install needs a tuning visit 2 to 4 weeks after handover. Lighting levels, blind positions, and audio volumes need real-world adjustment. Quote this visit as a named line (R2,975 to R6,941). Clients love it because it feels like care. It also catches bugs before they become complaints.

Mistake: No follow-up after sending the quote

Better: Most quotes that don't close, don't close because nobody followed up. Send a polite check-in 48 hours after the quote lands, and a second nudge at day 7. Two of every three accepted quotes get there because someone followed up.

Step by step

How to quote custom home automation jobs

Treat the design consultation as billable work, not a sales call. Walk the home with the architect or client, room by room, and produce a scope document listing zones per room, scenes per zone, control points (keypads, app, voice), and the integration depth for audio, blinds, HVAC, and security. Choose and defend one platform per job (Control4 for multi-subsystem residential, KNX for European lighting and HVAC, Lutron for lighting-led homes) rather than quoting side-by-side because that looks indecisive. Photograph rack space, confirm cable schedules during first-fix on new-builds, and flag retrofit pain points like chasing walls or wireless coverage gaps early so they land on the quote rather than the invoice.

Split hardware from programming because they are different conversations. Quote lighting scene controllers per zone with keypad engraving at $ 40 to $ 120 per keypad listed separately ('Movie', 'Dinner', 'Goodnight'), motorised blinds per window with battery-backup option, multi-room audio per zone with amp and speaker brand, and the central control processor ('Control4 or Crestron class') on its own line. Programming goes out as a named line with a range and a ceiling: '10 to 14 hours at $ 165 per hour, ceiling 16 hours' rather than 'programming included'. Include a UPS ($ 620 to $ 1,450) on the automation rack, rack ventilation, client training session, and a post-install tuning visit 2 to 4 weeks after handover as named lines.

Set a 30 day validity because Control4, Lutron, and KNX stock moves with import cycles and bespoke luxury projects often need long-lead items like engraved keypads. Lock scope before quoting and state on the quote that first-round design revisions are included but additional revisions are billed at $ 165 per hour, mirroring how architects charge. Any 'can we also add this' after sign-off is a variation quote at the same rate. Ask for a 40 percent deposit on contract, 40 percent on delivery to site, and 20 percent on commissioning. Offer a 'Year 1 support included; Year 2+ support plan $ 950 to $ 2,800 per year' line on every quote so the recurring revenue that stabilises a custom business is seeded upfront.

Send the quote within 48 hours of the design consult, not a week later. High-end clients expect a paid design deliverable and then a prompt professional proposal; if you take a fortnight the client cools on the project or interior designer pivots to another integrator. Build the quote on your phone during the consult where possible, or send a same-day WhatsApp link with the scope document, and follow up with the fixed-price hardware plus programming PDF within 48 hours. Variation orders on custom projects are common and each one goes out as a numbered revision using the same per-hour programming rate, never absorbed into existing hours.

FAQ

Common questions from home automation installers

Everything you need to know before getting started.

Yes. Add each system as its own line or section. Clients want to see where the money goes on a custom home.

Yes. Share the quote as a link via WhatsApp from your phone. High-end clients appreciate the speed.

Yes. Always split them. It lets clients see the hardware cost and the skilled labour cost separately.

Yes. Every quote has a unique public link. The client accepts online.

Yes. One click converts the accepted quote to an invoice.

Yes. The free plan gives you 5 quotes and 2 invoices per month with no credit card required.

Each platform has a sweet spot. Control4 is strong for custom residential with audio, video, and lighting integration, priced mid-to-high. KNX is the European standard for lighting and HVAC, more open but steeper programming curve. Lutron dominates high-end lighting and shade control, typically the premium pick for lighting-centric homes. On the quote, state the platform and a one-line reason: 'Control4 selected for multi-subsystem integration with single app control'. Clients who hire an integrator respect the rationale. Never quote multiple platforms side by side, it looks indecisive. Recommend one, defend it, move on.

Generally no, on premium custom jobs. Mixing Hue, Nest, and Ring with Control4 or KNX creates support nightmares and clients never know what's broken. On smaller smart-home jobs (see smart-home-installers) mixing consumer kit is normal and welcome, but on custom high-end quote a single unified ecosystem. That said, for clients who insist on specific consumer products (Sonos is a common one), quote the integration layer separately and be explicit that support on the consumer product is via the manufacturer, not you. Put it on the quote in writing.

Offer a support plan as a standard line on every custom quote. Typical structure: 'Year 1 support included (remote tuning, software updates, 1 on-site visit); Year 2+ annual support plan R15,701 to R46,276 per year'. State clearly what's included (remote access, scene updates, firmware) and what's billed extra (new scenes, physical changes, training additional users). Automation clients cannot live without support, and a clear support plan builds recurring revenue that stabilises the business against feast-and-famine custom projects.

New-build is cheaper per room because cabling is done during first-fix before walls close. Retrofit needs chasing, surface conduit, or wireless solutions. On the quote, state whether the scope assumes new-build or retrofit, and for mixed (e.g. new extension plus existing home) split the scope. For wireless retrofits, quote the wireless products (Lutron RadioRA 3, KNX RF, Control4 wireless) with a note that wireless has limitations versus wired (response time, capacity). Clients need to understand the trade-off before they commit. Honesty on the quote avoids disappointment at handover.
