Overview
A water tank install is half the tank and half what you put under it
A water tank looks like a product purchase. The customer picks the size, picks the colour, and waits for the lorry. The install is where the costs hide. The tank needs a base that won't settle, a level pad to sit on, a feed pipe from the source, an overflow to somewhere that isn't the neighbour's wall, an isolator, and a pressure pump if the tank is fed by gravity to a house. Concrete tanks need a foundation. Poly tanks need UV protection. Steel tanks need cathodic protection in the wrong soil. A flat-rate quote for 'fit a tank' is a quote that ignores the part of the job that actually breaks first.
QuoteGenio gives water tank installers room to put the install on the quote. Tank by model and capacity, base preparation by square metre or pad, feed and overflow piping by metre, isolator and float valve as their own lines, pressure pump where needed, and labour by day. Send via WhatsApp from the survey, take a deposit on the tank order, raise progress invoices as the base is poured and the tank is set, and the final invoice when the system is commissioned. The customer sees the install, not just the tank.
Who it is for
Who uses QuoteGenio
Built for every type of water storage and rainwater harvesting business.
The problem
The quoting headaches every tank installer knows
Tank jobs are simple to install and complicated to quote. Tank, stand, plumbing, pump, electrical, and tie-in. Miss one and your margin walks away.
Quoting takes longer than installing
A 5,000L tank goes in in half a day. Writing the quote up afterwards somehow takes the whole evening.
Clients underestimate the install
Most clients think 'tank' means just the tank. Without a clear quote, they argue about the stand, plumbing, and pump being extras.
Drought sales go to faster quotes
When water restrictions hit, the first complete quote in the inbox wins. A day late and the client has already booked the next installer.
The fix

Pricing guide
Typical Water Tank Installers job pricing
A rough guide to what tank installers charge for common jobs. Pricing varies by tank brand, capacity, access, and whether you're installing a backup, rainwater, or potable system. Use these as a sanity check when building your own rates, not as fixed numbers.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Site visit and assessment | R1,240 - R2,479 |
| 2,500L vertical tank, supply and install | R9,586 - R19,832 |
| 5,000L vertical tank, supply and install | R15,701 - R32,228 |
| 10,000L vertical tank, supply and install | R27,270 - R56,192 |
| Slimline 1,500L tank (space saver) | R11,899 - R23,964 |
| Pressure pump kit (1.1kW, automatic) | R7,933 - R19,832 |
| Full backup system (5,000L, pump, switchover) | R52,886 - R112,384 |
Pricing converted from USD to ZAR at indicative rates. Rates vary significantly by country, region, currency, and market.
Call-out fees
A tank install call-out covers travel and a site assessment of the proposed stand, the gutters or mains tie-in, and electrical supply for the pump. Most installers charge R1,240 to R2,479 for a daytime call-out. Always list it as a separate line so the client sees you're paid for the scoping work, not just the install day.
Hourly vs fixed pricing
Use fixed pricing for standard tank-and-stand installs with known plumbing tie-in. Use hourly (R1,240 to R1,818 per hour) for awkward access, mains switchover wiring, or stand build-up where ground conditions are unknown. Mix both on the same quote when the tank is fixed but the access is uncertain.

Example quote breakdown
Here's what a clean, itemised quote for a typical 5,000L backup install looks like. Notice how the tank, plinth, plumbing, pump, and labour each have their own line. Transparent quotes win tank jobs because the client can see exactly what's being installed.

Avoid these
Common quoting mistakes
We talk to a lot of tank installers. The same pricing and quoting mistakes come up again and again. Fixing these will protect your margin and stop the post-install arguments about what was 'included'.
Mistake: Quoting 'tank installed' as one line
Better: Break out the tank, stand, plumbing tie-in, pump, and electrical. A single 'install' line invites haggling and hides the work.
Mistake: Forgetting the plinth or stand
Better: Most tanks need a level base. List the plinth as its own line so it's never absorbed into 'install', especially on uneven ground.
Mistake: No allowance for switchover wiring
Better: Backup systems need a switchover or float-valve setup. Quote the switchover and electrical tie-in as separate lines so it's visible.
Mistake: Skipping the overflow line
Better: Tanks overflow. Always quote the overflow run to a safe discharge point. Don't leave it to the client to ask why their wall is wet next week.
Mistake: Vague 'pump included' line
Better: Specify the pump make, model, kW, and whether it includes pressure switch and accumulator. 'Pump included' is too vague and the client expects more than you priced.
Mistake: No allowance for difficult access
Better: Walking a 10,000L tank through a side gate is a real challenge. Have a 'difficult access' rate band and use it without flinching.
Mistake: No expiry on the quote
Better: Set a 14 to 30 day validity. Tank, pump, and copper prices move, and you don't want to honour a three-month-old quote at a loss.
Mistake: No follow-up after sending the quote
Better: Most quotes that don't close, don't close because nobody followed up. Send a polite check-in 48 hours after the quote lands, and a second nudge at day 7. Two of every three accepted quotes get there because someone followed up.
Step by step
How to quote water tank jobs
Walk the property before quoting. Measure the proposed tank footprint against the available stand area, check whether the ground is level enough for a 5,000L or 10,000L unit (anything over 3,000L needs a proper plinth or paver base), and note access: is there a side gate wide enough to walk a JoJo through, or does the tank need craning over the wall? Inspect the gutters if it is a rainwater harvesting job, locate the electrical supply for the pump, and identify the mains switchover point if it is a backup system. Photograph everything for your file so you can reference heights, distances, and existing pipework when you price.
Break the quote into tank, plinth, plumbing, pump, electrical, and commissioning. List the tank with brand and warranty ('JoJo 5,000L vertical, 5 year warranty'), price the plinth (pre-cast pavers, concrete base, or custom stand) as its own line, and quote inlet, overflow, and outlet plumbing together at $ 280 to $ 480. Specify the pump make, model, kW, and whether it includes pressure switch and accumulator ('Pedrollo 1.1kW automatic with 24L accumulator'), then list the mains switchover, isolator, and electrical tie-in separately. For rainwater jobs add first-flush diverter, leaf eater, and gutter tie-in lines. For multi-tank setups, quote each tank, stand, and the linking kit with bulkhead fittings as its own line.
Set 14 to 30 day validity on every tank quote. JoJo and other tank manufacturer prices, pump prices, and copper fittings all move, and drought demand spikes push tank lead times from one day to three weeks. For systems over $ 1,500 ask for a 40 to 50 percent deposit at acceptance to cover the tank order, pump, and switchover unit. State clearly whether the electrical tie-in is 'included, by licensed electrician' or 'by client', because a pump that cannot be commissioned on install day is a callback you absorb. Include a difficult-access premium in the terms for 10,000L tanks that need craning or dismantled access.
Send the quote before you drive off. Drought-triggered backup water sales go to the first professional quote in the inbox, and a day late usually means the client has booked a competitor. Build the quote on your phone at the proposed tank stand with measurements confirmed, WhatsApp the link before the client goes back inside, and follow up after two or three days. If you discover a hidden cost during install (the plinth needs extra work, the mains tie-in point is further than expected), send a variation quote immediately so the scope change is agreed in writing before the tank is craned in.

Common questions from water tank installers
Everything you need to know before getting started.

Yes. Once your quote is ready, share it as a link directly via WhatsApp. Your client gets a professional branded document instantly.
Each line item has its own description, quantity, and price. Add as many lines as the install needs and group them however makes sense for the client.
Yes. Every quote has a unique public link. Your client can open it on their phone and accept it online. No signup required.
Yes. Convert any accepted quote into an invoice with one click. All the line items carry over, so there's no double entry.
Yes. The free plan gives you 5 quotes and 2 invoices per month with no credit card required. Upgrade to Premium for unlimited quotes, invoices, statements, and reports.
Yes. Rainwater systems need a first-flush diverter, leaf eater, and gutter tie-in lines that backup systems don't. Backup systems need a mains switchover or float-valve setup. Have two separate quote templates so you can send each in 60 seconds without forgetting the items unique to that system type.
If you're not licensed, yes. Quote the electrical tie-in as a separate line and either subcontract or co-ordinate with the client's electrician. Be explicit on the quote: 'electrical tie-in by licensed electrician, included' or 'by client'. This avoids fights when the pump can't be commissioned because nobody booked the spark.
Quote each tank, stand, and the linking kit as separate lines. Linking kits include the bulkhead fittings, the equalising pipe, and the breather line. Listing them separately makes the cost obvious and prevents the client from assuming a 10,000L install is just a bigger tank rather than two linked 5,000L units.
14 to 30 days is standard. Tank manufacturer prices, pump prices, and copper fittings all move, and you don't want to honour a three-month-old quote at a loss. QuoteGenio lets you set an expiry date that appears on the PDF, so there's no awkward conversation if the client comes back later expecting the old price.
