Carpentry quotes need to balance design detail and price clarity. Here is how to write one that builds trust and books the job.
Carpentry covers everything from a single shelf to a full kitchen. The quote you write for a homeowner is doing two jobs at once: it is selling your craftsmanship and it is protecting you from the client who wants soft close drawers at chipboard prices.
Get the structure right and your hit rate goes up, your margin goes up, and the awkward conversations go down.
Confirm the brief before you price
Most carpentry disputes start at the brief. The client says "oak shelves" and means veneer. You quote solid oak. Now you are $ 1,800 apart with no way to recover. Write a one-page brief and price against it.
If you build out fitted joinery often, capture the brief, the materials, and the finish on the same screen the quote is built from. A tool made for quoting and invoicing for carpenters keeps that detail attached to the job.
Brief checklist
- Substrate (solid timber, veneered MDF, melamine, plywood)
- Species and grade (oak, pine, kiaat, meranti)
- Finish (oil, wax, lacquer, paint, raw)
- Hardware brand and grade
- Edge detail and joinery method
- Site or workshop build
Price materials honestly
Timber prices move. Sheet goods move. Hardware lead times move. Use a quote validity of 14 to 30 days on anything material heavy and say so on the quote. If the client signs on day 45, you have a clean reason to requote.
If you are bidding fitted kitchens, lock the supplier list and the model numbers in writing before the deposit lands. Reusable free quote templates keep that material schedule consistent from job to job.
Separate workshop time from site time
Workshop time is more efficient than site time. If you build a unit in the workshop and install it on site, your quote should reflect both rates, not one blended number. It also gives the client a real picture of where their money goes.
Sample labour split
- Workshop fabrication (estimated hours x rate)
- Finishing and quality check
- Delivery to site
- On site install and scribing
- Snag list visit
Show finish levels on the quote
Carpentry pricing is meaningless without a finish level. "Built in cupboard, $ 8,500" tells the client nothing. Add the spec right next to the price.
Try this format: "Built in cupboard, 2400 wide x 600 deep x 2700 high, white melamine carcass, sprayed MDF doors in Dulux satin, Blum soft close hinges, two adjustable shelves per bay: $ 14,200."
Cabinet making and bespoke work
Bespoke pieces sit in their own world. Drawers with hand cut dovetails, raised panel doors, solid oak frames. Price them like a furniture maker, not a fit out joiner. Work the jointed frames, drawer counts, and hand finishing time through a free quote calculator rather than a flat per metre rate, because it is usually closer to reality.
Allow for revisions
Clients change their minds. A second handle option, a different shelf layout, a swap from oak to ash. Decide upfront how many revisions are included and what extras cost. Two free revisions, then $ 450 per revision after that, is a fair starting point for fitted joinery.
Build a clean variations process into your quotes. Our guide on handling variations and change orders covers the wording. The wider construction and building trades set this up the same way to keep change orders from eroding margin.
Sample carpentry quote structure
- Site measure and design: $ 950
- Materials, sheet goods and timber: $ 6,200
- Hardware (Blum, Hafele): $ 1,800
- Workshop fabrication, 28 hrs at $ 320: $ 8,960
- Finishing (sprayed lacquer): $ 1,700
- Delivery and install, 2 days: $ 4,800
- Snag visit allowance: $ 600
- Total before VAT: $ 25,010
Payment terms
Bespoke carpentry should not be funded out of your bank account. A 50 percent deposit before workshop start, 40 percent on delivery, and 10 percent on snag sign off is standard and fair. Put it on the quote. Do not negotiate it later by SMS.
The bottom line
A carpentry quote that lists the substrate, the finish, the hardware brand, the build location, and the snag terms will outsell a one liner every time. Clients trust detail. Detail also gives you the cleanest path to defend your price when someone else comes in cheaper.
