Pet Grooming Pricing: Single Visits, Packs, Loyalty Plans

Pet Grooming Pricing: Single Visits, Packs, Loyalty Plans

Most pet groomers price by breed and never stop, leaving recurring revenue, no-show protection, and loyalty pricing off the table. The grooming businesses that scale price three ways at once: visit, pack, and plan.

Pet grooming pricing looks simple from the outside. Small dog, medium dog, large dog. Plus matting, plus de-shedding, plus nails, plus teeth. The trouble with that pricing model is that it leaves money in three places: the loyal repeat customer who would happily pre-pay for a six-pack, the no-show problem that empties the diary, and the recurring monthly plan that keeps the same dog on the books for two years instead of two visits.

The fix is a three-tier pricing model. Tier 1 is the single visit, priced by breed, coat, and condition. Tier 2 is a pre-paid pack of 4, 6, or 10 visits at a small discount per visit. Tier 3 is a recurring monthly loyalty plan that includes a set number of visits and locks in priority booking. Saving all three tiers as free quote templates means each one is a click to send. Each tier captures a different customer relationship and protects a different part of the diary. If you are not already taking deposits on the single visits, the pack tier is what makes that conversation easy because the deposit is the pack.

Tier 1: the single visit, priced honestly

Single-visit pricing is built up from breed, coat, condition, and add-ons. Start with a base by size: small dog (under 10 kg), medium (10 to 25 kg), large (25 kg plus). Then add coat surcharges for double-coats, curly coats, or wire coats that take more time. Add condition surcharges for matting, fleas, or coat over a certain length. Add specific service lines for nails, teeth brushing, ear cleaning, anal glands, de-shedding treatments.

List each surcharge separately on the quote so the customer sees what is being measured. 'Base groom (medium dog): $ 65. Curly coat surcharge: $ 12. De-matting: $ 18. Nail trim: $ 8. Total: $ 103.' A free quote calculator adds the base and the surcharges into the right total every time. Customers who see the build-up understand the price; customers who only see the total argue that 'last time it was cheaper'. Clarity is the protection.

Tier 2: the pre-paid pack

A pack of 4, 6, or 10 visits at a small per-visit discount (typically 5 to 12 percent off the single-visit rate) does three things at once. It locks in a deposit (the pack is paid upfront). It guarantees future revenue (the customer is committed to coming back). It protects the diary against no-shows (because the customer has already paid).

Quote the pack as a single line on the proposal: '6-visit pack: $ 360 (saves $ 30 vs single-visit rate). Valid for 12 months from purchase. Includes base groom only; coat and condition surcharges apply per visit. Cancellation policy: 24 hours notice or visit forfeit'. The customer accepts and pays once, and the next six grooming appointments are pre-booked into the diary as the pack is consumed.

Tier 3: the recurring monthly loyalty plan

The loyalty plan is a monthly subscription: a fixed monthly fee covers a set number of grooms per quarter, priority booking, and (often) a small percentage off coat or condition add-ons. Typical structure: $ 75 per month for one full groom every 6 to 8 weeks, plus 10 percent off any add-on services, plus priority booking in busy seasons (Christmas, summer).

The plan changes the relationship from 'once every few months' to 'monthly customer'. It also changes the customer's mental model: they are not deciding whether to book a groom this month, they are pre-paid and the question is when. Conversion from a happy single-visit customer to a plan member is much easier than people assume; the offer just needs to be on the proposal alongside the pack and the single visit.

Travel and after-hours: still on the quote

Mobile groomers and mobile dog washers absorb travel into their day rate without thinking about it. The fix is the same as for any other mobile trade: list travel as a separate line. 'Travel and call-out: $ 1.20 per kilometre, return trip from base. Free within a 10 km radius'. Customers who book outside the free radius see what travel costs and either accept or shift to a pack tier (the pack often includes travel inside the radius).

After-hours and weekend grooming attract a premium. State it on the quote: 'Saturday and Sunday bookings: 15 percent surcharge. Bookings before 9am or after 5pm weekdays: 10 percent surcharge'. Customers who want premium availability pay for it; customers who do not shift to a weekday window. Either way, your weekend rates are not absorbed into the standard day rate by default.

Cancellation policy: pack-tier protection

Pet grooming no-shows are the diary killer. A 30-minute groom that does not happen is a 30-minute slot that cannot be sold to anyone else at that hour. The single-visit deposit (50 percent at booking, balance at appointment) is one fix. The pack tier is the bigger fix: the appointment is pre-paid, and the cancellation policy is documented on the pack acceptance ('24 hours notice or visit forfeited from the pack').

On the loyalty plan, the cancellation policy is monthly. Most groomers run a 30-day notice period: cancel anytime, the plan continues for 30 days from notice, and the next billing date is skipped after that. State that on the plan proposal so the customer agrees in writing when they sign up. The handling-payment guide covers the same logic for any recurring service.

The bottom line

A pet grooming business that prices three ways at once captures three customer relationships at once. The casual customer pays full single-visit rates. The repeat customer pre-pays for a pack and saves a small amount per visit. The loyal customer subscribes to a monthly plan and gets priority booking and a small bonus on add-ons. The diary is more predictable, the no-shows are fewer, and the recurring revenue line on the P&L stops being seasonal.
